This vintage 1960s pair of Toledo, Spain damascene cufflinks features intricate 24-karat gold inlay against a blackened metal background, with beautifully detailed bullfighter and bull figures and scrolling decoration. The cufflinks are presented on their original Toledo display card, making this an especially appealing piece for collectors of vintage men's jewelry, Spanish damascene, and mid-century accessories.
The original card measures approximately 2-1/4" x 1-1/2" and has “$125.00” handwritten at the bottom, presumably an original or later retail price. The cufflinks themselves are substantial 7/8" in diameter, giving them a bold presence when worn.
The card and accompanying presentation are particularly interesting because the card identifies the pieces as Toledo damascene and the original packaging states:
“Damasquinado con ORO 24 Kb. TOLEDO”
This translates approximately to “Damascened with 24K gold, Toledo.” Toledo is renowned for its traditional damascene craftsmanship, in which gold is intricately inlaid into a dark metal surface to create elaborate decorative designs.
The designs feature dramatic gold-on-black decoration with toreador and bull figures, surrounded by intricate scrolling lines and ornamental details. The combination of the large 7/8" size, elaborate gold decoration, and original presentation makes these particularly striking examples of vintage Spanish men's jewelry.
Good vintage condition with the expected signs of age. The intricate gold inlay remains bright and well defined. The original card and packaging show age-related wear. Please see all photographs for the best representation of condition.
