This vintage 1970s men's suit jacket is a standout example of the decade's bold tailoring, featuring exceptionally wide lapels, rich chocolate brown knit polyester fabric, ornate cream and tan paisley lining, and distinctive antiqued brass military-style buttons. With its long silhouette, dramatic proportions, and unexpected decorative details, this jacket captures the confident, expressive style of 1970s menswear.
The brown exterior has a textured knit appearance that gives the jacket a substantial, comfortable look. The interior reveals a striking cream and tan ornamental paisley pattern, complemented by a black woven label reading “Clothing by MERIT, Tailored for Speidels, Iowa City, Iowa.” An old Amalgamated Suit Workers of America union-made label is also sewn inside the interior pocket.
The construction is especially distinctive. The jacket features very wide 1970s notch lapels, a single open patch-style chest pocket, and front patch pockets with flaps. The underside of the pocket flaps is finished in the same patterned lining fabric, a thoughtful detail that ties the exterior design to the elaborate interior. Antiqued brass-tone buttons with an ornate military-inspired design add another layer of vintage character.
The back features a large single center vent, while the long, tailored cut gives the jacket an elegant, elongated profile. It would be an excellent statement piece for a vintage wardrobe, retro-inspired styling, stage or costume use, or anyone who appreciates the distinctive look of 1970s men's fashion.
Approximate Measurements (taken with the jacket lying flat):
Armpit to armpit: 20.5"
Shoulder to shoulder: 18"
Shoulder to sleeve end: 28"
Armpit to sleeve end: 19.5"
Back length, measured from the base of the collar to the bottom hem: 32.5"
There is no surviving size tag. Based on its proportions, I estimate this jacket to be approximately a men's size 40 Long. The 20.5" pit-to-pit measurement corresponds to approximately 41" around the chest when doubled, before allowing for wearing ease. Please check the measurements against a jacket that fits you well.
Styling Ideas:
Wear it with high-waisted tan or light brown trousers, a wide-collar shirt, and a patterned vintage tie for a classic 1970s look. It would also work beautifully with dark denim, flared trousers, leather accessories, and vintage boots for a more relaxed retro or urban cowboy-inspired outfit.
